how to use ubuntu as file server

Asked by srihari

I have a few machines running windows XP connected on lan via a network hub.
Now managing storage independently for every machine is a bit problem.

I am planning to connect a machine running ubuntu with 40GB, 500GB HDDs to this network and assign some part of storage space from 500GB of it every user ( no of users < 15, machines <10 ).

I want ubuntu machine to be as file server and windows xp machines will be access these by mapping drives.

I am new to networking and linux.
appreciate if someone could provide steps to follow to execute this plan.

Thanks in Advance.

simply create the folders for the users on the ubuntu machine, then right click to access the folders properties. In the sharing tab, select share this folder. You should be presented with an error message telling you that you need to install missing software to share with windows. accept its offer to install the SAMBA suite and enter your administrative password. Once synaptic has finished installing the software, return to the folder's sharing properties. Check the share box, enter a share name, and any other options you like. The folders will now be mappable as the share name you entered on the hostname of the ubuntu machine from network neighborhood.

once you get it networking, you might find out that the windows machine does not want to open files from the ubuntu server.
to fix this you must go to the windows machine and under internet properties, click the security tab, set local intranet to low, click the sites button, make sure the box ¨automatic detect intranet network¨, and click the advanced button. add the IP address of the ubuntu server, and if you set up a DNS on the ubuntu server, its name, i.e: ´ḧttp://yourubuntuserver´

Can you help with this problem?
