sounds like a good plan but isn't it better to keep existing working systems, integrate with them and then gradually replace. Saves being in a big hurry to get everything completed in one go and saves worry if one part or another doesn't quite work first time. Even on a single desktop it's good to keep a dual-boot option so that the user can get back to something familiar until more experienced with using linux for all tasks.

Sorry about butting in. Good luck with this

Tom :)

no . i have two options for server from Management.

use linux or Windows as I like.

I have been with windows servers but i hate them.

that is why i wanna try total replace.

it is now plain and clean setup . no need to worry.

all servers will be Ubuntu and clients will be XP.

if my testing environment is fine, management will agree to go on as I like.
but i have to make sure first.

so i need first of all Ubuntu Active Directory like DOmain controller to
completely replace MS DC.

that is all.

Please note that this is not the only support forum provided by Ubuntu and the paid support have a lot of experience with the type of setup you are implementing.
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/support
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/support/paid
In here though we only usually deal with desktop but occasionally small server issues.

It really does sound good. I would still urge caution tho especially if you're not used to linux. Perhaps it would be possible to set up a single small machine with a dual boot into Ubuntu Server Edition. Once you've got it set up then switch it into the network to test it does all the key functions you need - or use a small group of machines. I am assuming that your existing server is just about working of course. Second step would be installing ubuntu server as dual-boot on servers. Once that was working fine then delete the Windows OS and stay in ubuntu. A slightly slower process but one that means you constantly have something that works and a fall-back position in case of trouble. Installing Ubuntu takes less than an hour but getting Windows back onto a system can take days. I am not entirely sure about the details you are asking for either so a trial run seems the best policy. I doubt this helps but ...

Hopefully someone like Marcobra will reappear soon and be able to give precise definitive answers

Good luck and regards from

This is a rather complex subject to be solved on a query and answer.

Here some references, but Goggle is your friend here:

Samba (v. 3) PDC LDAP HOWTO http://www.unav.es/cti/ldap-smb/smb-ldap-3-howto.html
The Official Samba-3 HOWTO and Reference Guide http://us4.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/

Here an italian howto (i think not very useful for you, but...): http://www.pictux.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5

Hope this helps

I think a network will need "smbclient" in addition to the basic Samba packages.

Can you help with this problem?
