Share networked drives with Windows XP machine

Asked by Steve Lake

I have Ubuntu 8.04 on my desktop machine and connected to it are 2 external hard drives. I want to share documents (for example, Open Office docs) and other files (like photos in jpg format) on those drives with my wife's laptop - which runs Windows XP. The laptop connects wirelessly to our router while the desktop connects directly via ethernet cable.

How do I set this up? The community documentation on samba seems to be out of date and is confusing - not corresponding with what I can see from Ubuntu 8.04

All suggestions welcome!

Hi Steve
Go to a (any) folder and make a click with the right button and you see a pop up menu, then select share options, there you will be asked to enable sharing.
Hope this helps, let me know.

Wow, that even works if the folders are on an ext3 partition! I didn't think Windows could handle ext3 but over the network an Xp machine just wrote to a shared folder on my ext3 partition!

Thanks; that works fine! I guess I was assuming that I'd define the sharing at the level of the drives rather than the folders.
