It would be nice to get Samba 4.2 in Wily (4.1 in Maintenance mode for 6 more months. EOL by 10/2016)

Asked by satmandu on 2015-07-16

As per the Samba web site:

14 July 2015
Samba 4.2.3 Available for Download

This is the latest stable release of the Samba 4.2 series.

23 June 2015
Samba 4.1.19 Available for Download

This is the last stable release of the Samba 4.1 series.

So I'm just wondering if samba 4.2 is going to be part of the Wily release.

[Edit: Upon further clarification, have discovered that 4.1 will receive security updates from the Samba team until ~ 10/2016 as per https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba_Release_Planning ]

Although
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba_Release_Planning

Doesn't say 4.1 is EOL. Where did you read that it is, please?

Because my link shows that Samba 3.6 has just dropped off and 4.1 has lots of support left. Judging by the pattern it is a few years... No?

I've searched
https://www.samba.org/samba/latest_news.html

Which is the "further news" link at http://www.samba.org and there is no occurrences of "eol", "life" or "end".

You will also notice my link is also from http://www.samba.org and shows 4.1 being developed for a long while to come.

The message "Samba 4.1.19 Available for Download. This is the last stable release of the Samba 4.1 series." does NOT mean that 4.1 is EOL.

The version 4.1 is now in maintenance mode:
"Maintenance mode means that there are regular bug fix releases to address major issues and security issues. Less patches are backported to this branch than to the current release series."

Ubuntu is taking over most packages from Debian. The Debian stable, unstable and testing releases are currently delivering the same version of samba as Ubuntu Wily (2:4.1.17)
There are already two bug reports in Debian with the request to update to 4.1.18 or 4.2.1+ https://bugs.debian.org/787772 and https://bugs.debian.org/787773

I suppose that the Ubuntu packagers for samba will wait for Debian to create an updated package, and then they most probably will adapt that one to Ubuntu specifics.

I assume that the bug report that you have already created will help.

Thanks for the clarification all.

While I'd of course love ubuntu to track samba's stable every 9 month release schedule, you're probably right in asking me to go pester the debian folks.

Along these lines, is there any chance anybody might be interested in a PPA that followed the http://enterprisesamba.com/ packages, which appear to track the current samba stable release?

Can you help with this problem?
