samba is repeatedly broadcasting

Asked by Joe Winczewski

Recently samba started broadcasting itself across my local network every several minutes.
It never used to do that before and it is not just annoying it is also problematic in several ways.
#1 it is causing repeated logging on this system which will not let the hard drive spin down.
#2 except for this new nuisance my network is quite unless I am doing something (not a peep of activity)
#3 when gaming on a game console this activity causes a lag.
#4 I really really don't like unnecessary and unknown activity on my network.
#5 there are more reasons but I will stop here
Can someone please help me stop samba from broadcasting and just sit there listening quietly waiting for
a client request like it used to.
Thank You in advance for anyone who may be able to help me.

 Ubuntu 10.4.LTS (fresh install)
 samba v.2:3.4.7
