How is the network connected? Do you use a router?

i have the same setup; win7 netbook and a main pc with ubuntu 11.04

depending on the files you want to transfer i just use a usb stick, works on both systems fine [i'm normaly transferring about a gig]
for smaller files i use the ubuntu one online file storage and access it on my netbook through a browser

linking both of your systems might a problem, not with ubuntu but with win7. i'm sure someone on here much more techy than me can help

First I caution you about hooking two computers together without a router between them. Something serious could happen.

There are special cables to do this with and you are able to transfer information. A LAN CABLE IS NOT ONE OF THEM.

If you are unable to transfer via Network then the next best thing would be a USB thumb-drive.

What could happen that is serious? A crossover cable with manual IP settings works perfectly..... Why is a router so critical? All it does is push the same data to the right port as it traverses the device. A crossover cable IS a LAN cable and is perfect for p2p communications.

Once we find out the layouot of the network, we can advise.

it is a direct connection b/w two PCs.... actually there is more than 100gb of data i need to transfer from UBUNtu PC to Win7 PC... i can't depend on those USB sticks, which, its too much time consuming

sudo apt-get install smbfs
sudo mkdir /mnt/remote
sudo chmod 777 mkdir
sudo mount -t smbfs -o username=windowsusername //192.168.1.3/sharename /media/remote
cd /media/remote
ls -l

"smbfs" should/can replaced with "cifs"
chmod 777 is ok since its only LAN... if u go internet better change that.
create a sharing in the windows machine

good luck
