What are you looking to do with your home network? Is your goal to get multiple computers to connect to the Internet? Or to share files with each other? Or something else altogether?

but isn't samba only for sharing with Windows?

i would love to see a solution like the "workgroup" in Windows for Ubuntu -> so i only have to click on network in Nautilus and all Computers connected to the same "workgroup" are shown.

is this possible in Ubuntu sharing with Ubuntu?

"but isn't samba only for sharing with Windows?"

No. You can also use it to share files and printers between Ubuntu systems, and between and Ubuntu system and a Mac OS X system, and between an Ubuntu system and a Fedora system, and so forth. It is the most common way to share files between machines on a home or small office LAN, with Ubuntu.

And Samba supports workgroups, even when you are sharing between all non-Windows systems.

The documentation explains how to set it up. If you have questions, please feel free to post another reply.
