Active Directory, LikeWise open and LDAP

Asked by Jim Johnson

I have a Ubuntu 11.04 system and Likewise open 6, and I’ve successfully joined to a Server 2003 domain.

I have a couple of programs I’m trying to get running in Wine, and both depend on LDAP for authentication. I’ve overcame the hurdles of getting the executables to work, but the programs don’t authenticate.

The two programs are TechExcel Servicewise, which is a helpdesk ticket agent, and 8e6 authenticat.exe (not a typo). Authenticat.exe is a program that logs users into the 8e6 internet filtering software.

Servicewise gives me a LDAP error when I try to log in, even though my credentials are correct and work in the Windows partition of the machine. (dual boot)

Authenticat.exe runs successfully, but doesn’t give me any feedback to a problem, and I’m blocked from websites as if I wasn’t logged in. My username can get to Youtube for example, and a guest user cannot.

As you can tell I work for a IT department and am trying to use Ubuntu as my primary OS. I can handle the command line, I’m a old DOS hand, but some of the stuff is over my head. In troubleshooting, several tips have you run CLI commands from /opt/likewise/. I don’t have the “likewise” folder. Yet, when I select System>Administration>Active Directory membership, it says I am joined to the domain successfully. I also am able to navigate network shares without giving credentials, indicating I’m logged in correctly. My email even works from a Exchange 2003 server.

Ubuntu is finally ready for prime time, I’m loving it. If I can only conquer this last hurdle I would be happy. My experiments don’t have much practical use right now, but our whole department is interested in how this goes.

Any help troubleshooting this would be appreciated.
