import keys

Asked by L. P. Luigi Espenlaub

Ubuntu 11.04 - the Natty Narwhal - released in April 2011
Work around needed because this keeps any one with windows machines from accessing them from an Ubuntu machine. I have 2 xp and one win7 machine I need to network with with Ubuntu. no mater how I try to install samba [see below] i receive 404 and fetch failure messages. then the network drivers have to be replaced with a whole Ubuntu installation using the repair option.

Do I need to drop back to another release of Ubuntu? In which case which one?
[searching the bug and answers gives the impression that it seems to be a continuing problem no matter which release.

Any recommendation until the bug in nautilus-share and in Samba's site instructions are fixed would be greatly appreciated.

The package seems to be the “nautilus-share” source package which downloads and installs samba.

However, two of the packages are not located in the samba site and a 404 error is received. Executing this package results in the network connection [drivers?] being rendered unusable and the network connection disconnected,

When I try to share a file folder and use Ubuntu's install File sharing utility
i receive the install fail message and this detail:

Details: Text ended before matching quote was found for ". (The text was '$ gpg
--import samba-pubkey.asc
$ gunzip samba-version.tar.gz
$ gpg --verify samba-release.tar.asc

Using the Ubuntu software center gave me this detail following failure.
Failed to fetch
http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/s/samba/samba_3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.2_i386.deb
404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.31 80]

I tried to use the download site but the launcher I created by pasting in the
text from
http://samba.org/samba/download/
 returns the following error.

Details: Text ended before matching quote was found for ". (The text was '$ gpg
--import samba-pubkey.asc
$ gunzip samba-3.6.0.tar.gz.

When I insert the missing ["] after the word "Key" so the line reads:

gpg: Good signature from "Samba Distribution Verification Key" \
  ‹<email address hidden>›

I get the error:

Details: Failed to execute child process "$" (No such file or directory)
At this point I cannot identify which process "$" is not being found, other than it is one of the failed fetches.

When I tried to report this I discovered after a reboot that the networking drivers had been trashed.
After searching it would return “you are not connected”
I had to reboot from the dvd and re-run install. I then selected repair. And after another boot was able to get on line to report the problem.

Your package index could be out of date, referring to an old version of the deb that has been superseded.

try

sudo apt-get update

before installing samba. If this fails, use the software-sources program to switch mirrors from the US mirror to something else.

Thank you very much for guiding me through that one, unfortunately, now the problem seems to be workgroup vs domain in windows XP world. we have a home network of three computers, to which I am attempting to add this Ubuntu computer.
[Basically I want to be sure of access to all shared folders on the network before I start installing Ubuntu on the other three and eventually stop booting windows entirely.] I have had little to no exposure to the Unix world and due to dyslexia and a visual brain, I am a total failure most times at command lines.]

I now have an Ubuntu folder with the network symbol and the workgroup name.
When I open it, The window reads
------------------------------------------------
 "Password required for "WORKGROUP" [we use a different name]
The computer's user name is correct
and asks for a password
-----------------------------------------
While we have individual user logins on our machines we were never asked nor set a network password, or the password may have been "blank" [Win XP installs were several years ago].

If I leave the password blank, I get a reshowing of the above window with no error message, such as "wrong password"

Then later I get the following message window:
--------------------------
Unable to mount location
DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
------------------------
I can see my XP machines from my other XP machines, but no hint of the Ubuntu machine in the XP network workgroup window.

I have been trying to find help in Christopher Negus's "Linux 2009 ed Bible" If you can refer me to a better teach by example reference or where in his book to go I am willing to study.

Any further help you can give to get me past this further glitch I will be most grateful for.

Can you help with this problem?
