network file sharing

I want to access files from my windows desktop computer on this ubuntu laptop over the network. I have a large amount of files to access of varying file size. Im looking for something similar to windows media center. Is there any help available for my situation?
I am literally hours into my ubuntu experience and have never worked with an OS other than windows. Please go into full detail when explaining things to me.
