Windows Network

Asked by William Batie

Will try one more time. From the responses for the last post (1), I assume that everyone like me knows nothing about networking Ubuntu (11.04) with a Windows Workgroup. The hardware is a Linksys WRT320N router. Three LAN (wired-2 PCs, 1 MAC) and three wireless computers (2 Pcs,1 MAC). One wired and one wireless computers are MAC (Lion-wired and Snow Leopard-wireless. The other two wireless are XP Pro and the wired are XP Pro and Vista Ultimate 64. Right now I am only interested in the computers wired to the router, i.e.; Ubuntu, XP Pro and Vista Ultimate 64.
1. All computers can access the internet including the Ubuntu 11.04.
2. All computers can see the Ubuntu on the wired network and can access it.
3. All computers belong to a workgroup named "WORKGROUP".
4. Firewall disabled on all computers. Samba installed on Ubuntu
5. All Computers, expect Ubuntu, can access each other in the WORKGROUP under Network.
6. Under Network in the Ubuntu's Home Folder, the Ubuntu sees the MAC and can access the file system. it also sees "Windows Network" icon. Double clicking on the "Windows Network" yields a "WORKGROUP" icon. Double clicking on the "WORKGROUP" icon results in an error message "Unable to Mount location-Failed to retrieve share list from server"
7. In the Home Folder under File selecting Connect to Server... and changing Service type: to Windows share, followed by entering say the Vista computer's IP address gives me the files' icons on the Vista computer which can be access. The same is true for all other computers.
 8. I suppose this is a crude way to network, but it is not acceptable.
9. Why cannot Ubuntu see the network like the Windows and MAC. Is there something about the Linksys router that is causing Ubuntu not to find the server list which Windows and the MAC can.
10. I so much want to use Ubuntu, but it seems to be what was called years ago “User Unfriendly”.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I have spent weeks trying to get wired networking to work.
Thanks,
Bill

The linksys uses defacto standards set out by ISO so the router is absolutely moot. Additionally it also runs Linux ;)

Can the Ubuntu system ping the other systems by IP and/or name.

Not only can the Ubuntu ping the other computers, but as stated in #7. it can find the other computers one by one.

It's the revised Samba which Vista and Wn7 use. Samba between Ubuntu and XP works fine. Funnily enough Microsoft helped code Samba (as far as I recall).

I am confused, is not samba used to allow Windows computers to access Ubuntu? If this is the case, I can already do this, I just can not get Ubuntu computer to see Windows Network.

Can you help with this problem?
