error: Unable to mount location when trying to connect to windows share

Asked by Fred Friend

When I click on Places/Network this opens a window that shows "windows Network" when I click on this I get to "Workgroup" my window LAN name. After I click on this folder it opens showing all my connections on the Lan. When I click on a device (fredseven for instance) a message appears stating connecting to fredseven. but after a wait I get an error message stating "Unable to mount location".

Can anyone help please?

Thanks Actionparsnip.

My ubuntu machine is BUFFMESH trying to connect to Windows 7 machine FREDSEVEN on all on "Workgroup". Also happens when I try to connect to my Vista machine.

FREDSEVEN can connect to Ubuntu and open the pictures OK.

I have to say that I am a novice when it comes to Ubuntu OS.

Thanks

Yes because Ubuntu uses the STANDARDIZED Samba. Win7 has had it rewritten and the definitions never disclosed. Ironically Microsoft worked on mking the early Sambas but have not published their revision which seems to relate to authentication.

I suggest you read this:

Thank you for that. Have managed to access my Windows shares by clicking on "connect to a server" and entering the ip address.

Will leave it at that then. Thanks for your help.

If you run:

gksudo gedit /etc/hosts

You can add the name and IP to that file and you can then use the name.
