Ubuntu can't access Windows 7 computers on home network

Asked by Benny Butler

My problem is similar to the one asked in Question #131610, but I believe that I can provide some additional information that may be of help in someone coming up with a solution.

I have 3 computers on my home network: 1) a Windows XP Home, 2) a notebook computer dual booting Windows 7 Home (64 bit) and Ubuntu 10.04, 3) a desktop computer dual booting Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) and Ubuntu 10.10.

Both Ubuntu computers can access the XP computer with no problems. The Ubuntu 10.10 computer can access the Ubuntu 10.04 computer and vice versa with no problems. Up until this week, the Ubuntu 10.04 computer could also access the
Windows 7 Ultimate computer. The 10.10 computer has never been able to access the Windows 7 Home computer. This week the 10.04 computer started asking for login credentials again. I supplied them, but the credentials screen simply keeps coming up again. I suspect that this is due to either an update to Windows 7 or to Ubuntu. I have applied all the Ubuntu 10.04 updates, which were quite extensive this week.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Thats because win7 uses a revised Samba version needing extra stuff. You are not the first with this. You should make sure your firewall allows the local traffic as well as ensure the account you are accessing the share with has a password. This is important with Win7 shares. The XP and and Ubuntu systems talk well as they use the old Samba and so can talk well. Microsoft have annnoyingly change the samba in Win7 and causes all sorts of headaches.

I'm aware that I'm not the first to encounter this problem. There are dozens, perhaps hundreds, of posts of similar problems. But a solution should be possible. I successfully accessed my Windows 7 Ultimate machine from my Ubuntu 10.04 notebook for several months before this problem developed.

My Ubuntu 10.10 computer would never access my Win 7 machine at all. This leads me to believe that the problem is something in the Ubuntu updates.
