Can't mount Windows 7 Share printers

Asked by cary holmes

When I open System-Administration-Printing-Add-Network Printer-Windows Printer via SAMBA-Browse I can see all the windows workstations and windows servers in the network. However when I double click on any of them none of the shared printers show up.

I have other linux workstations installed, ie Mandriva, and it has no problems printing to the windows shared printers so I know it is a Ubuntu configuration issue.

I saw a article, though I can not find it now, that explained how to manually edit the smb.conf file for windows print sharing and windows file sharing. I would like to get a hold of this article once more.

Also if I go to Places-Network all the windows servers appear but I get the following error if I attempt to open "Unable to mount location" Failed to retrieve share list from server. It seems as though there is a authentication problem but it isn't clear why.

Please assist

If you run:

smbtree

Do you see the printer share?

I executed smbtree in a terminal window ... it returns nothing. Not familiar with smbtree so I may be executing it incorrectly.

I had my network hub unplugged ... when I type in smbtree it displays all the Windows Servers. The one I am interested in shows as follows.

         \\CSHW7-MAIN-B1
failed negprot: ERRnomem

Well I found an article explaining how to install a WIndows Printer using CUPS, ironically it worked the first time.

SAMBA seems to be much more difficult to configure. Nevertheless I will try to figure it out.

How is that ironic in any way?

It is ironic because SAMBA has a gui interface that is meant to make mounting printers and file shares simple, instead the installing CUPS, which does not have a gui interface, is more simple. That's ironic.

Thats not ironic at all. It'd be ironic if CUPS was called wontwork but it made it work. The description you gave is not ironic in any way.

Using a gui isn't always the easiest way, users just seem to prefer them as what can be achieved in one command in terminal scares them and their hands are still spot-welded to the mouse after years of windows use but that doesn't make using something harder an ironic situation.

It is a matter of opinion. Since gui interfaces are intended to make task easier it is totally ironic in every way that a more manual process was much easier in this case.

Can you help with this problem?
