network: can't see files on my Vista laptop from Ubuntu 9.1 Desktop

Asked by Don

From my Vista Windows Laptop I can see my Ubuntu Desktop Computer and all shared files on the desktop machine.

From my Ubuntu Computer I can see the Vista laptop but no shared files. The messages is "unable to mount location, failed to retrieve share list from server.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Did you share a folder in Vista? If you have a firewall you need to allow the traffic through. The windows firewall should be disabled so it does not complicate things

It fixed the problem. Though the McAfee subscription that came with the Laptop expired eons ago, It was the McAfee Firewall on the Laptop that was blocking entry to the Share List. I didn't remove it and the firewall was still active.

Thanks for your help . . . . . Don

New to Ubuntu: read the Ubuntu Manual, it's very informative: http://ubuntu-manual.org/
