How to update Karmic Samba

Asked by mjpking

I am running Karmic 9.10 with Samba, Version: 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.6. There have been some Samba fixes since Version: 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.6, that I would like to install. How do I find these fixes, install them and know that they will be compatible with Karmic 9.10? The Synaptic Package Manager shows my "Installed Version" equal to the "Latest Version", 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.6.
Can you explain how I can determine what version of Samba I can install with Karmic 9.10, and then how to implement that?

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:polslinux/ppa && sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Should do it, this is a 3rd party PPA so comes with no assurances, you can log a bug to get the newer version available for Karmic.
