Samba: ext4 to ext4

Asked by Derek White

Why can I not transfer files from an ext4 partition to an ext4 Samba share without renaming the files to remove characters that Windows does not support? Windows has nothing to do with my setup; so, why am I constricted by it's naming scheme?

I have about 200GB of files to transfer to a new computer. Sitting at the computer waiting for it to get around to an invalid folder/file name so I can hit skip and remember to move it over later is...not a good user experience, especially at 4-6MB/sec. Additionally, my Rythmbox archive needs to be moved. If I change the ':'s to something then all my song titles will be wrong, since it pulls them from the filename.

Thus far, using Samba just seems like a really bad idea. Is there another, better way to share advanced file-systems (ext4) over a network?

If you're sharing to Linux clients, consider using NFS. It's quite simple to setup and use.
