why there is no newer version of rsyslog available as a package

Asked by David

I was following the rsyslog project the past month and I wonder why there is not newer version available in apt-get, there are few improvements with performance and new persistence support like mongodb that can help users.

I am using chef to install my servers and it would save time to have the package on apt-get

thanks you

I suggest you report a bug, stating what new features and bugfixes are in the newer version. If they are significant then it will be update, but Ubuntu is not a rolling release distro so packages will be behind somewhat.

If you are using Precise then you can run:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ukplc-team/testing
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install rsyslog

Ubuntu does not normally update a package just because a new one is available.

Updates are normally made if fixes a significant bug or a security issue; otherwise updates are only done with new releases.

You can always install a later version yourself and Andrew has given you instructions on how to do this in the last post.

If you feel the latest version does fix significant bugs or security problems then report a bug detailing the changes and an update will be considered.

Can you help with this problem?
