problem in internet connection in Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by Rezaul Kabir

I have used Ubuntu 8.04, in which I have configured the Broadband connection using pppoeconf command. I have recently installed Ubuntu 9.04 as 9.10 has resolution problem. When I installed Ubuntu 9.04, the kernel was 2.6.28-11-generic. I used pppoeconf command to configure the Broadband connection and this worked. After some time the update manager updated the os and the connection indicated 'x' in notification area; however I am still getting internet connection. On resuming the session after 1 hour, I am not getting internet connection anymore. On checking I found the kernel has been changed to 2.6.28-17 while the previous files are also there side by side.
Can any one get me in the correct direction so that I can re-establish the internet connection through BSNL Broadband?

Alright so the first thing could be that suspend and resume problem
could be interfering with the internet. Shutdown your system, then turn
off your modem and then turn it back on and turn on your computer as
well, the kernel updates just add functionality to Ubuntu not remove
anything :)

Thanks a lot, Vikram for the answer. However, this method has been used by me on the very first occasion. The problem of interfering kernel has been resolved by using the janitor which removes the previous kernel. Then I used the network connection menu, in which I selected DSL and put the login data there, then I gone back to terminal to use pppoeconf program.
After this I got my BroadBand connection back.
But one thing is to be noted, in the notification area, the network is still showing 'X' sign.
Again, thanks a lot.
