Rhythymbox should play mp3 files with a package installation but I cannot find or install this update.

Asked by frandant

I have 4 problems,

Rhythymbox cannot play mp3 or wma files. Tried to do a get-apt gstreamer, (to install mp3 package) but it didn't find the right package to install. I installed original 5.10 installation and then the installation updated many packages after the original install.

Cannot find Limewire.deb version.

Tried to copy an audiodisc but right clicking on the audiodisk and choosing Write to disc but received message:"Could not run subprocess: Failed to execute child process "cdrdao" (No such file or directory)."

Seemed to have lost the root password, everytime I try to do administrative tasks it asked and refuses my password.

For the MP3 playing, you want gstreamer0.8-mad, but the easiest is to install gstreamer0.8-plugins which will pull in that and many others.

There is no Limewire .deb at the moment, but there are other Gnutella/P2P clients available in the Ubuntu Universe APT repository. Assuming you have the Universe repo enabled, you can take a look yourself by invoking `apt-cache search gnutella` or `apt-cache search p2p` in a Terminal.

As for cdrdao, this may be a genuine bug. I have tried this, and it is also the case for my situation.

As for your password, have you changed your password recently?

For the password, do you really mean root password or your own which you use with sudo?

In either case, you can start the computer in recovery mode, then type:

passwd username

to change the password for 'username'.

Solution for playing mp3 files in rhythmbox:
Go to Applications > Add/Remove...
In the Add/Remove Applications menu, go to "Show" located on the top right corner and select "All available applications".
In the Search text box, enter "ubuntu restricted" and download/install the package.
If installing the restricted package fails, re-installing ubuntu and re-install the restricted package. It worked for me.

To get limewire, go to this site: http://www.limewire.com/download/download.php?version=linux_deb

To play mp3 or mid files (I am talking about music here), I followed what JACOB posted earlier

     It worked well for me.
