Can't add songs to rhythmbox, I'm a noob.

Asked by Bradford

I have music that I would like to be able to play on my fresh install of ubuntu with the included rhythmbox. However, it won't let me add my mp3's to the program they won't show up at all except in my music folder that I created. I set the music folder as the source for my library but the library in rhythmbox doesn't show anything. The mp3's do not have DRM stuff. Oh and keep in mind this is my second day of using linux.

Are you sure that your files are properly tagged, and that you have read access to the folder the files are in? Do the same files work when you import them with the "Import File" or "Import Folder" options in the "Music" menu?

Have you added support for MP3? Ubuntu does not include it because of licensing restrictions.

If not, click on applications, add / remove and then make sure to show "all available packages". Then, click on "other" and scroll down to "ubuntu restricted extras" and check the box and then apply. You might want to also install the medibuntu package (http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/). I can't remember what each installs but with both of them most audio and video will work in ubuntu.
