Try to see it in Rhythmbox by clicking on Music and choosing Scan Removable Media.

When you plug the phone to the computer it should mount automatically. Does a new icon with a name of the phone appear on the top panel add on the desktop? If so you can reach your phone by clicking on "Places" on the top panel an then finding it there. After that you can transfer files by the file manager.

It seems your phone doesn't mount automatically to your Ubuntu file system. Post here your phone please.
Excuse me, I'm about to leave now so you have to wait for an answer of another person.
