Thanks for the quick reply, but I am as puzzled as ever. I have run rhytmbox a number of times and have downloaded a couple of podcasts, closed rhythmbox and restarted Ubuntu Jaunty. On re-opening rhythmbox, the podcasts are still loaded, so rhythmbox is saving the confif file somewhere, but there is no rhythmbox folder in ~/.gnome2.
I looked in ~/.config since that's where banshee config files are stored, without success.

then I think that is a problem with the beta version of jaunty.

Claude
Thanks for your support.

I have located the missing config files!!!
For anyone else upgrading to Jaunty, the config files are no longer stored in ~/.gnome2/rhythmbox they are now located in ~/.local/share/rhythmbox.
Having located the files, I googled and found this message from one of the rhythmbox developers (http://www.nabble.com/paths-to-rhythmdb.xml-and-other-files-td22034357.html) dated about six weeks ago. It says that the xml files are being moved from ~/.gnome2/rhythmbox/ to ~/.local/share/rhythmbox/.
I hope this helps anyone else who comes across the same problem when upgrading to Jaunty.
