When exactly does rythmbox open? When you click on "Places" or when you click on a specific folder?

Other than that, did you try the following:

1) type "nautilus" into a terminal
2) right-click on any folder
3) go to the "Open with" tab
4) the right setting there should be "Open Folder" (means you open folders with nautilus)

I think this might help as well -

1. Right click the Ubuntu icon next to "Applications".
2. Uncheck "Lock to panel" - leave it if it's already unchecked.
3. Right click it again, this time click "Move".
4. Move it somewhere else.
5. Try again.

What happens now? If Rhythmbox no longer opens when you click "Places", it was caused by there being a shortcut to Rhythmbox overlapping the Places button on the panel.

If it still opens Rhythmbox, what Bernhard said should do the trick, though.
