Change audio file format while copying to USB audio

Asked by PAB

Hello,

Is there a way to change the format of a file when copying it to my USB audio drive ?

My USB audio drive does display in Rythhmbox no problem but the files from my library are kept in the same format and quality (MP3 - 192 kbs). I would like my files in the USB audio reader to be in OGG format with less quality (lets say 4 or 5) to save space since my USB drive is only 1GB.

Thanks in advance....

If you don't mind using KDE software, try Amarok. Amarok can (if soundconverter is installed) convert from MP3 to OGG when you copy files to your media player device. That could be done from Amarok's Settings dialog, under "Removable devices" (I'm not using Kubuntu right now so the translation may be incorrect) by choosing "OGG" to only supported audio format. When you copy songs to the device, Amarok will try to convert them to OGG.

But be aware, only a few MP3 players support OGG files to be played. If you're using just USB stick with computers (like I do), everything should be ok.

If possible, I would prefer to stay in a software with a standard Gnome interface.

My player is running on a PocketPC. I use GSPlayer that can read OGG very well.

I talked to a rhythmbox developer (doctau):

Rhythmbox handles file conversions according to the HAL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_abstraction_layer) report. Rhythmbox currently doesn't support overriding the file conversion settings for plain usb devices like you're using.

They're working on a workaround with a configuration file put in the top-folder of the usb-drive, to handle usb devices like "normal" music players. That's how banshee handles usb devices: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/banshee-list/2007-January/msg00002.html

So you also might give banshee a try, which is also a gnome audio player.
