My Speakers dont make any sound

Asked by Jdomingo22

I used to run MS XP and thats when my perfect choice USB speakers worked fine under a realtek driver. Then I Installed Ubuntu 8.10 and my speakers don't work anymore. They are recognize for when I open sound options I can see my speakers as " C-USB audio" but yet no sound comes out of them. I only get sound from my front "2.5mm" plug, plugged to my perfect choice headphones.

can someone tell me what to do??
or Wich drives to install and where could I find them?

This sounds like a Driver Problem, please provide more driver information

I used to run realtek.
Now I just run ALSA or whatever comes with the instalation of intrepid.
my speakers never needed an actual driver they were "plugn'play" type since the were meant for laptops but they worked fine under MS XP desktop with realtek.
I don't know what else to tell U.

So I tried the FAQ/Troubleshooting thing and everything was OK my sound crad was recognized and all but yet my speakers dont make any sound. I know its nt the speakers nor my plugs since Ive used the problem speakers on my friends MS laptop and they worked fine then he lend me his 3.5mm plug in speakers and they worked fine yet my USB ones dont. Ive toyed alittle with the sound preferences and I fund my speakers as recognized and plyaed the "pipeline"test on them the test played yet when I opened Rhytmhbox and played some music they didnt make any sound at all.

Can you play movies in Totem and do the games have sound? It seems like it's a problem in RhythmBox only? Have you looked at the volume settings in rhythmbox (sorry, i had to ask - sometimes it's the obvious that does fix things)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Yes Ive tried KIno And Totem with my headphones they sound perfectly but my speakers again don't make any sound .

Not to worry I know Obvious sometimes ain't that obvious, but yes I've checked to see it wasn't muted by clickeng on the volume/Speaker Icon on the top right hand corner of rhythmbox.

Do the speakers need Usb2.0 and are plugged into a Usb1.0? Sometimes it's worth just trying out different Usb ports on your machine. One of the main usual differences is that Usb2.0 allows a device to draw power from the machine rather than have a separate power cable. Sometimes a device has a special Usb cable with 2 plugs into the machine. Errr, i guess i'm asking if your speakers have a mains power supply?

Actually They are USB2.0 and all of my ports are USB2.0
No they don't have a separeta power supply they just leach from the computer

P.D Thx for all your help Tom. :)

Sorry, my connection is desperately slow. I was hoping that someone else might help out with this question but it's beginning to look as though you'll need to repost it tomorrow early evening or something to catch new people at the front desk as americans get home from work/school. If the speakers worked in the same Usb ports with another OS all i can suggest is try out a tiny distro on a LiveCd (i mean without installing it to your machine). I like Wolvix for this
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wolvix
it has an icon on the bottom taskbar, a "crossed spanner and screwdriver" that has a tool for trying out different setups for sound. Wolvix is Slackwware rather than Debian based so it'd be interesting to see what results you get for that. Also it might hint at a tool worth trying in Ubuntu. If you go this route then good luck in your hunt ;)

Alternatively hunt through these links to see if there's a hardware incompatibility issue, personally i find this route a lot less interesting
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SupportedArchitectures
http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw

Finally all i have now is this link which looks hugely tough to me and i haven't worked through it to solve my own troubles with a certain game

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

lol, another "obvious" answer (and therefore one that i'd often overlook) is to make sure your headphones aren't plugged in while trying to get sound from the speakers

Definitely more fun and interesting than the other ways which i'd rather pull my own teeth out than try lol. Hopefully it'll actually help reveal the answer too which would be a bonus ;)
