I need to download windows media player 11 for my new mp3
I just got a Coby MP705-4G and It says wmp 11 will reconize it. I tried plugging it into the computer without it and unbunto isn't able to pick it up and te devise says it's in usb mode. (i have ubunto 8.1) I also checked on the "help" and I found this but I got no ideas on what it means :If Rhythmbox Music Player do not detect your device as an portable audio player, you can create an empty file .is_audio_player at the top level hierarchy of the filesystem of your player. ; if this is somthing I need to do to the devise than I'm back to my original proble.: The computer isn't even picking it up

If you want to install wmp11 in ubuntu, i'm not sure that you can, it's because before installing, wmp11 setup must detect genuine of the windows ...

To try installing a Windows program you'll either need to try Wine or else use VirtualBox or similar to install Xp in a virtual machine on your machine or else set up a dual boot with Windows but that sounds a bit restrictive for this.
Find Wine by going up to the top taskbar and click on
System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager
it will ask for your normal user password, not your SuperUser/Root one. Use either search tool to look for & install "Wine". Note that "Wine Is Not an Emulator" as it uses a different approach that runs programs a lot faster than they would run in an Emulator. Wine HQ might have some guidelines on how to get Window Media Player 11 working, see it's Applications Database
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

I think taking notice of the original error message and working with that might work better but that would require knowledge on my part and willingness to try the answer out on the part of iltx

The title asks 1 question but the description asks another. I've no idea how to force-mount nor about getting devices recognised. I was hoping that installing something might help draw in dependencies that might fix the other problem too. At least dealing with the problem in the title does half the job ;)
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

We don't think installing Win Media Player will help - we think you need to try Abi's suggestion. However, to install Win Media Player 11 you'll either need to try Wine or else use VirtualBox or similar to install Xp in a virtual machine on your machine or else set up a dual boot with Windows but that sounds a bit restrictive for this. Find and install Wine by going up to the top taskbar and click on

If you don't actually try the suggestions in either of the threads you have about this issue then i don't see how you expect to solve this. Also i don't see the point of posting a question if you're not willing to try out the answers that people give.
I think the questions are "Do you want to solve this problem? or do you just want to complain that you can't solve it without doing anything that might lead to the problem being solved?"

A future version of Wine will have USB driver support, which will supposedly allow things software like WMP or iTunes to see USB devices and recognize them, but it won't be available for at least 8 months. I still have to boot into Windows to interface with my Windows Mobile phone. Dual boot is a good idea.

Dual-boot is a great idea. I also want to try out VirtualBox and install Windows on the virtual machine but i can't find any reason to use Windows stuff at the moment. Perhaps i need to try to find a reason to get into using Usb devices

what is dual booting and how do i do so?

Dual boot means you have both Windows and Ubuntu on the same computer, and you can restart the computer in order to run one or the other. Did your computer come with Ubuntu pre-installed?
https:/
Tom: Can VirtualBox can't handle USB devices? I don't think that method works either.

Oh, ok. So you told it to use the whole hard drive and overwrite the Windows installation? It doesn't show a GRUB boot screen when you start the computer? Like this: http://

Ok, forget dual-booting then. Although i have installed Windows quite a few times i still find it quite a painful process and one worth avoiding if at all possible. Ubuntu is very different. Although it's much easier it took me a few try-out's before i was able to install it decently. Mostly i found that it worked best when i had all the devices i normally use all plugged in. Another thing that helped was trying to install a few other distros so that i finally worked out what was happening at most of the different stages. The best one for learning about the install procedure was Wolvix and it might be interesting to see if you can install Wolvix on a tiny 1Gb partition on the same drive as Ubuntu. You should be able to do this without destroying the Ubuntu install and it should be able to read all the data that's on your Ubuntu partition.
http://
https:/
While this guide is for installing Ubuntu as the 2nd OS on a drive that already has Windows as the 1st, i'm sure you can use it to work out how to install Wolvix as the 2nd OS that already has Ubuntu as the 1st one.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

If you are still having trouble with this then please post it as a new question. Only the most recent questions tend to get looked at so posting/re-posting a question just before america arrives online after work/school gives the best chance of getting a good few answers - such is the nature of the internet.
https:/
If the problem has been resolved then please follow the link to the forum thread and mark it as Solved but please give us a clue how you did manage to solve it and also use the button under where you type stuff in rather than giving me karma credit points for just sending this note to you.
Apologies, good luck and many regards from
Tom :)
