It sounds like what it download isn't something a podcast.
When Rhythmbox downloads, what is supposed to be podcast, and it turns out to be something else. It can't play it and it will say 'failed'.

That's just my guess. Perhaps its something else. Which podcast were you trying to download?

They are podcasts I have previously downloaded using iTunes (now inserting the RSS link into Create New Podcast box in Rhythmbox)- NPR Fresh Air; NPR Wait, Wait Don't Tell me; NPR This American Life, etc.

Ok i'm trying NPR fresh air myself right now. Lets see what goes wrong.

I've downloaded en played the latest episode of NPR fresh air succesfully.

Questions:
  1. What version of Ubuntu are you using?
  2. How much free space is available on your hard-disc? You can see if you look at the status bar in your home folder.
  3. Do MP3's normally play fine?
  4. Do all podcasts fail for you, or only this one? Do all episodes of NPR fail for you or only some?

Thanks. We'll figure out what's going on!

Have you installed the necessary codecs to enable MP3 playback? The following page details how to do that:-

Thanks so much for everyone's willingness to help. I am definitely a newbie with Linux, so am still learning what needs to be in place to run all the various apps.

it's funny i had the SAME issue with MizMarie, except my music plays. i feel like it successfully downloaded but it still says failed, and yet it plays.

any ideas?

n00b here. :\

i have a similar problem to MizMarie. I have a question for Alan Pope: the link you give for the mp3 codecs has instructions for Kunbuntu 7.04 but not Unbuntu 7.04. Does it matter? I don't fully understand the difference between GNOME and KDE i guess. Thanks.

For what it's worth, I posted a bug on launchpad that is being reviewed. When I install any of the upgrades to 7.04 via Update Manager, I lose sound permanently across all applications. Apparently a number of people are having the same problem.
