"stream contains no data" means the data is either corrupted or the codec isnt working correctly.

Thank you Shane.
What is codec, and what do I do about the proposed problem Shane?

OK,
I went on the web and found five different codec video files.
Dosn't the latest Ubuntu version have the correct video file?

Further to above,
I went to Application, and down loaded Gstreamer and MPlayer, but to no avail.
however, I now get the message: could not open audio device, device is being used by another application.
I shall continue to explore the problem

GOT IT!

Via application, the setting in "sound" in the first four lines was set to: Pulse Audio Sound Server,
and the last line: "Default Mixer tracks" set to: Alsa PCM on Font:O (stack92xxAnalog
 I got sound!!!
A little perseverance (a lot actually) a whole day's work, but it was worth it, right?
