Unable to encrypted songs from my ipod

Asked by Michael Beeby

I have recently converted my workstation to Ubuntu 8.04. My iPod has a mixture of tunes I loaded from CDs and tunes downloaded from iTunes. I am unable to play many of the songs downloaded from iTunes because they showed 'Encrypted' (message 'this file is encrypted and cannot be played'). Is it possible to 'decrypt' these files in order to play these songs using Rhythmbox or is there an Linux application that I must use?

Secondly - if I download any new songs from iTunes, will I be able to synchronize my iPod using Rythmbox, or must I use another application?

I'm not really sure about the "encrypted" message, but if you don't have codecs installed to play mp3 or whatever iTunes uses (is it aac?) that could be why. If you need codecs, open add/remove from the apps menu, change the "show" box to all available and then search for "gstreamer". Install the ones that refer to mp3 and aac (assuming that's the right one). I always just install them all. While you are there you may want to go to click on the "other" category and install "ubuntu restricted extras" as well. In fact, I think installing that will also install the gstreamer stuff as well.

Hi Jim...thanks for the tip. I was missing the GStreamer plug-in for AAC files, but after installing the plug-in, I was still not able to play the files/songs highlighted with the 'encrypted' icon.

Install the following packages by issuing the given command in a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal):

sudo apt-get install faac faad

Give your user password when prompted.

Hi Steve - thanks for the suggestion, but as we say in French 'désolé'...still no change in the files/songs indicating 'Encrypted'. I am still unable to play these specific files.

In which case it may well be that they can only be played in itunes, its only a hunch though.

Can you help with this problem?
