I have no sound/volume...

Asked by Sheila

When I open volume control it says "no volume control gstreamer plugins and/or devices found. When I try to play music, either one I have on file or a cd, it goes crazy, all the song titles go flying by and these red circles with white minusses appear in the volume column. The bottom taskbar tab says"music player paused". Not by me or that I cantell. If I right click on a song and go to properties it says "failed to connect stream. Invalid argument" and another red circle with white minus sign. I read in the FAQ's that Rythmplayer music box seemed to be a common link, so I deleted it, and when nothing changed, I reinstalled it. Before I lost sound I had just installed myHP deskjet all in one. To do this, I had to install HPLIP in etch. I made a few uneducated decisions about usb modules? To try and fix this problem I system-pref-sound and made sure software was enabled. I also sudo apt-get install avahi-daemon
still nothing! Please help..I am so confused!

I did play sound in my speakers, and no, I don't use compiz. Should I? I deleted rythmbox again, and it didn't change anything. I have tried all different ways to get some sort of sound and not a peep. Whatever it is that is going on, is very strange. The way the playlists zoom by in the "music player when I try to play something. The only player that doesn't do that is limewires. It just simpl;y doesn't play. The error mesages all refer to streamers in some way or another. Does any of this help?

Ok I read in a post Debian Etch:
First In Debian you need a permission to can play audio:

# add USER sound

(USER is your name of account)

Second, if not work you need reconfigure you sound card (make sure do install alsa-utils):

#alsaconf

Third, make sure that you download rhytmbox to official Debian Repositories, compilation of Ubuntu probably don't work.

Good Luck, Sheila.
