Asked by Dale Winchell

Just had ubuntu installed. tried to play cd and appears to play but no sound. The speaker icon on desktop has red x next to it. right click on red x and it says "no volume control elements and or devices found". How do I fix this. I am new to linux.

Please give some information about your hardware. You can do that in Terminal by typing "lspci" and pasteing the result here.

Are you in "audio" group, ie do you have the necessary privileges to use sound devices? You can find it by selecting System » Maintenance » Users and Groups, then select your username and click Properties, select the User's Rights and check that you have enabled the "to use sound devices" checkbox.

(I'm using Feisty in Finnish so I'm not sure about the exact names of the menus etc.)
