No Sound

Asked by rosingjh

My problem is basic. I have no sound. I am trying to play an mp3 file that can be played in frostwire fine. However, in rythmbox the file plays but no sound comes from the speakers. Is there an option I need to turn on? Am I missing something?

Can you get anything to play? Like a cd perhaps? If you get sound from a CD your problem is probably your mp3 codecs. Check this page for details:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats

I'm not really leaning towards that however because I would expect you to be getting some kind of error if your codecs are not properly installed. If the CD does not play either try editing your sound controls and make sure your sound properties are correctly configured. You can do this easily by adding the volume control to your Gnome panel. Simply right click on an empty spot on the gnome panel and then select "Add to panel...". You will be presented with a dialog search for "vol" and the volume control should be apparent. Once you add it you will have a little speaker icon added to your panel. You should be able to figure it out after that.

Try this, advice comes from one of the best linux installation websites:
http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_5_installation_notes.html#Rhythmbox

Note: if you don't have any sound output you may have to run "gstreamer-properties" in a terminal and select an alternate default output plugin. For example you may have to change from the ALSA plugin to the OSS plugin in order for your sound to work.)

Succes

OK, having some issues now I can't seem to get past. I am trying to install the supposed sound fix for laptops with fiesty. Unbuntu hosts this link at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto

Here is what I did according to these directions https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto

1. I downloaded the lastest versions of alsa-driver, alsa-lib, and alsa-utils provided by the link

2. I extracted those files and then moved them into a directory I created /home/lord/Desktop/drivers-installs/ALSA/

They then give me the command sequence:
sudo mkdir -p /usr/src/alsa
cd /usr/src/alsa
sudo cp /home/naaman/installers/alsa/* .
sudo tar xjf alsa-driver-1.0.14rc1.tar.bz2
sudo tar xjf alsa-lib-1.0.14rc1.tar.bz2
sudo tar xjf alsa-utils-1.0.14rc1.tar.bz2

3. I changed it to what's below because I assumed /naaman/installers what just arbitrary or personal organazational
I also changed the tar xjf command to refer to the files real names which I had located in that directory (but I have tried it both ways:
)

sudo mkdir -p /home/lord/Desktop/drivers-installs/ALSA/
cd /home/lord/Desktop/drivers-installs/ALSA/
sudo cp /home/lord/Desktop/drivers-installs/ALSA/* .
sudo tar xjf alsa-driver-1.0.14rc4
sudo tar xjf alsa-lib-1.0.132
sudo tar xjf alsa-utils-1.0.13

The response to this command sequence is:

lord@Machine:~$ sudo mkdir -p /home/lord/Desktop/drivers-installs/ALSA/
Password:
lord@Machine:~$ sudo mkdir -p /usr/src/alsa
lord@Machine:~$ cd /usr/src/alsa
lord@Machine:/usr/src/alsa$ sudo cp /home/naaman/installers/alsa/* .
cp: cannot stat `/home/naaman/installers/alsa/*': No such file or directory
lord@Machine:/usr/src/alsa$ sudo tar xjf alsa-driver-1.0.14rc1.tar.bz2
tar: alsa-driver-1.0.14rc1.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
lord@Machine:/usr/src/alsa$ sudo tar xjf alsa-lib-1.0.14rc1.tar.bz2
tar: alsa-lib-1.0.14rc1.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
lord@Machine:/usr/src/alsa$ sudo tar xjf alsa-utils-1.0.14rc1.tar.

I am very new to Linux can anyone help me or point me in the right direction?

I get no sound from anything. I'm using the on board sound connection on my gigabyte motherboard. When I click the volume control, I get this message:
No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.
When I click System
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback.
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot are appreciated.
