As far as I am aware, Rhythmbox will read from an ipod, but won't sync to it. The most common application for this is called gtkpod, and it is available it the Ubuntu repositories. You should also be able to use amarok, but this app requires a bunch of KDE libraries. I think it's the best music player available in linux, but is a little heavy and requires KDE libraries. Therefore, gtkpod is probably the best place to start.

The rhythmbox in the newer distributions is quite capable of writing to ipods, it doesn't sync automatically though, you have to manually select the songs/albums you want and drag them to your ipod.

Can you help with this problem?
