Version control of generated files

Asked by Charbonnier

I browsed the source code of rhythmbox and I can't figure out why generated files such as Makefile.in are version-controlled.
Why not ignoring those files since they are automatically generated when running autogen.sh?

Rhythmbox is part of the Gnome project. Maybe you get an answer there https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Rhythmbox

Can you help with this problem?
