Suddenly, from one day to the next, there is no sound.

Asked by Raul

Yesterday, my music files played flawlessly; today there is no sound whatsoever: files, CD, login or logout, nothing. Sound is dead.
I receive the message from ¨totem¨ that it ¨could not establish connection to sound server¨. I use Rythmbox 0.9.3.1 or SoundJuicer, never ¨totem¨.
I´ve gone into ¨preferences¨ in ¨volume control¨, but to no avail. What is the ¨sound server¨ and how do I fix it?
Thank you.

I suspect it's talking about the sound daemon "esd". If you go to System --> Preferences --> Sound --> Sounds (tab), do you have a tick next to "Enable software sound mixing (ESD)?

Is the default sound card listed there correctly? Some machines have more than one sound card, for example.

Thank you Alan:

I put a tick next to ¨Ënable software sound mixing (ESD)¨ Now it¨s working
again. I don¨t know if it was ever ticked and, if it was, how it ever got
unticked.

Thank you, I greatly appreciate your concern.

It got sound working again. But the next time sound was off. The immediate
login following that, sound was again working fine.
However, I don"t want to bother anyone with something that may not be able
to be fixed and may be a recurring fault.

Thank you anyway
Raul
