Cannot get hotsync with my palm Vx

What applications and librarys, etc are need to get my Palm Vx working. I vae tried installig and running the Gnome Pilot applet, but it does not recognize my Palm

 I looked at the link. It refers to a fix for a Palm that uses a USB connection. My Palm Vx is older and uses a serial connection. Any thoughts? It can't get past the part of the setup routine that is supposed to go out and read the name and user number. I have tried all 4 TTYSx ports and the DEV/Palm setting
