Charles,

.mp3 format is considered restricted due to copyright/ patent issues.

To resolve this, open terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal)
Input the following command:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

* This will also install DVD playback, Flash, Quicktime, WMA and WMV. (See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats for more info)

This should take care of it for your issue.

Thanks,

Steven

Did exactly what Steven suggested, the results were the unpacking of a package. it also issued the following warning: msttcorefonts uses defoma │
 │ │
│ Msttcorefonts uses the DEbian FOnt MAnager (defoma). If you wish to use │
│ the fonts provided by this package under the X Window System, you must │
│ configure it to use defoma fonts. │
 │ │
│ The easiest way to do so is to use the x-ttcidfont-conf package. For │
│ more information, install the x-ttcidfont-conf package and consult its │
 │ documentation under /usr/share/doc/x-ttcidfont-conf. │
 │ │
│ For uses of msttcorefonts not related to the X Window System (e.g. │
│ printing) this is not required.

None the less I rebooted the system and still no mp3 recognition :-(

Open an MP3 in Totem Movie Player. Follow the onscreen wizard selecting all available packages.

Ok, I tried that and got this result
Cannot install 'gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly'

This application conflicts with other installed software. To install 'gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly' the conflicting software must be removed first.

Switch to the 'synaptic' package manager to resolve this conflict.

I didn't have all this rough of a time when I was using 7.04 Any how when I went to the Package mgr I didn't know what to look for or where to find it. In 7.04 I resolved this mp3 issue twice without help. I'm bummin, I may just have to blow this away and go back to 7.04

It's telling you that synaptic can solve the conflict, so open Synaptic
go to System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager.
Click the Search button, and enter gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly in the
dialog window.
When it appears in the list in the main window, click the box to the
left of the package name and select Mark for Installation.
Then click the Apply button.
Now you may get a dialog telling you that other packages either need to
be installed or removed.
Unless you see a any reason not to, tell tell it to install.
