rhythmbox on strike after kernel update

Asked by Tobias Schaffrik

HI,
my rhythmbox worked all fine until I agreed to a kernel update.
Now starting it via the terminal, it gives me the following error:
(rhythmbox:17040): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Unable to start mDNS browsing

RB opens, shows all files but does not play a single file nor CD-track.

I tried to undo the kernel update but did not succeed.
Does anybody have an idea?
Thanks, Tobias

the kernel update was

inux-image-2.6.15-26-386 (2.6.15-26.46) to 2.6.15-26.47
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.15-26-386 (2.6.15.11-3) to 2.6.15.11-4
linux-restricted-modules-common (2.6.15.11-3) to 2.6.15.11-4

when I boot with the older version, everything is fine, so I think I should go with that and wait for a bug-fix.

With which tool (or command) did you upgraded the kernel?

Hi Alexandre,
normally I use synaptic for software issues (that's where I got the package-information from), but if I remember it correctly, the update was run by "udate manager" and I simply agreed to the procedure.
Is this an answer to your question?

It is unlikely that the problem is the kernel.

Try to install `avahi-daemon' with this command:
sudo apt-get install avahi-daemon

That should mute the warning message, but I'm not sure if it will fix the problem. In case the tunes are in MP3 format, try to (re)install restricted plugins.

Hi Alexander,
sorry for not keeping in touch. I'm on holiday and will be back at my desk next
weekend. You may well be right that there must be something else wrong, as
Rhythmbox sometimes runs well booted with the old kernel, the other day I must
reboot the old one once again...
As soon as I'm back, I will get in touch with you.
Thanks a lot for your patient support!
all the best,
Tobias
