Rhythmbox no longer detects iPod

Asked by Tara D

I'm runnning latest Lubuntu Gnome on my netbook.
Rhythmbox used to recognize my old 4g ipod mini just fine. After my last software update, Rhythmbox can no longer detect iPod when plugged in. 'Check for new devices' does not do anything. There are other items missing from the side pane as well e.g. radio source is gone.

Rhythmbox help menu suggested the following "If Rhythmbox Music Player does not detect your device as a portable audio player, you can create an empty file named .is_audio_player at the top level hierarchy of the filesystem of your player"
I added the .is_audio_player file to iPod in file manager with no effect.

My instinct is to remove and reinstall Rhythmbox. Alas, I'm a Linux noob and don't yet know how.
Suggestions appreciated

Yes I still have this issue. I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 (Lubuntu desktop) on my Asus netbook. The audio device is an ipod nano.
Rhythymbox seems to be missing features in the side pane
Thanks

I'm not expert in packet. Try this command
   sudo apt-get install rhythmbox -V
If it fails, try those
   sudo apt-get remove rhythmbox
   sudo apt-get install rhythmbox

Thanks delance

I did suggested remove & install commands. They worked fine in the terminal but didn't do anything noticable to the app. same old rhythmbox same issues.

Best

I can't do more for rhythmbox
1) Could you run:
   sudo apt-get install mtp
and look if Ipod is seen.
2) Could you plug Ipod, and run command:
   lsusb
You should see a line related to Ipod.
3) Could you have a look at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PortableDevices/iPod
4) Could you see if Ipod has an option to use classical USB Mass Memory Storage protocol instead of MTP (Windows protocol for mobile device).

The ipod is fine and i can access it in file manager. if i change the protocol to storage it won't play my music. I think I'm going to give up on rhythymbox and try Banshee or something. The frustrating thing is that rhythymbox used to work with this device perfectly and then stopped after I updated my os.

Can you help with this problem?
