How to put songs on my ipod?

Ive been up for hours trying to figure out how to put songs on my ipod? I've been trying to create a new playlist under the drop bar for my ipod and importing files to it (which worked to put the music in my library) but its not working and i cant figure out how to put music on my ipod. Ive been trying everything from copy and pasting, right clicking and trying to add to playlist but it doesnt show the playlist i created. Basically i have one playlist in the ipod section that has all my music in it which is already on my ipod and i have another playlist with all my new music i wanna add to it and i cant figure out how to combine them or put them in a new playlist together. I just dont know what to do. If anyone can help that would be great.
