hebrew support for Rhythmbox 0.10.0

Asked by Guy

I have music that I would like to be able to play on my fresh install of ubuntu (v 7.04) with the included rhythmbox.
The music is in Hebrew and so is the songs titles , in the rhythmbox the song titles and the artist are in gibrish.
My Linux box works fine with Hebrew in Firefox and other applications.

Thanks Guy

This is an issue with the encoding of the text in the songs. Rhythmbox supports UTF-8 (Unicode) though the songs could have any sort of 8-bit encoding. An 8-bit encoding is generally indistinguishable from any other 8-bit encoding.

Some media players have the option, if a title is not valid UTF-8, to use an 8-bit encoding that you specify in the options. Rhythmbox does not have this option as far as I know, so you may have to choose something else here.

The long term plan would be to convert the encoding of the text in the songs to UTF-8. You can use EasyTag for this job, and Rhythmbox will be very happy.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_media_players for a full list of media players, including for Ubuntu.

I do not have this requirement for legacy encodings, so I am not sure which one has the feature.
I would risk a guess that Beep Media Player (from the above list) supports legacy encodings. The package name is "beep-media-player".
Please report back if it works for you.

I've tried BMP and it does not support legacy encoding. I will try finding another utility that can handle this issue.
