If you plug you mp3 player is he recognize by ubuntu ? (like an external hard drive)

Try to create an empty file called ".is_media_player" at the root of your mp3 player and try again

I have amarok too! Still can't get the player to be recognized. It comes up as an external drive when I plug it into the USB port, but Amarok won't recognize it. Any Ideas?

I would simply guess that music players such as Amarok or Rhythmbox do not support a lot of external music players aside from the Apple iPod.

The best option is to check the Rhythmbox website and bug reports and see if anything pops-up.

I was able to get my sansa express working with amarok.

Not sure if it helped or not, but in the process of trying to get banshee to work with it, I created an empty file
called .is_audio_player in the root of the device. It now shows up in amarok; I then configured it as a "generic audio player"

My girlfriend have a Cowon iAudio D2, and this is what I did to make it work with Rhythmbox:

- Set the USB Connection on the D2 (Under Settings > System) to MTP
- Created the .is_audio_player on root of the D2 file system.

Restarted Rhythmbox (I guess re-connecting the player will give the same effect)

1) Click on 'Places' in the Ubuntu task bar and check the entries under 'Computer', e.g. 'X.Y GB Filesystem'. There may not be any.

2) Plug your phone into your PC via USB and connect as a USB drive.

3) Once again, click on 'Places' and you should see a new 'X.Y GB Filesystem', this should be your phone. Click on it to open it.

4) Right click in a blank bit in the right hand pane and choose 'Create Document > Empty file'. Enter '.is_media_player' (without single quotes) as the file name. Press <ENTER>.

5) Go back to (or start) Rhythmbox and click 'Music > Scan Removable Media' and it should add it to the list of devices.

That's it.
