Music Library: Multiple Locations set - but no way to see what these are

Asked by rupert

Despite only setting one folder in Rythmbox where my music is stored (/mnt/music) the Preferences Dialogue states that I have Multiple Locations set. However, it does not show what these locations are....is there any way to find out what these multiple locations are?

I am presuming this is because it is Hard Coded to search ~/Music and then the additional Folder I set, which is all well and good, but since it doesn't tell me what additional folder I have set, this is not very useful.

You are right in the fact it is hard coded, but it is not aimed at a typical music folder, it is aimed at your Ubuntu One folder(even if you dont use it). Furthermore, to my knowledge there is no way to remove it. However, if you would like to view the library status, and see which libraries are being watched, follow these directions:

Press "ALT+F2" to open a "Run Application" window

Type "gconf-editor" without parentheses and the press "Enter"

You should now see the "Configuration Editor" window.

In the left side panel, open Apps/Rhythmbox

in the right panel there should now show a listing of "LIBRARY_LOCATIONS"

it should show you 2 locations seperated by a comma, the first is your selected library, the 2nd is the preset Ubuntu One

I have been able to change the first without any problem but i cannot remove or change the 2nd one. I believe it is coded into the program and thus cant be removed.

Hope this helps.

After messing around for the last 5 minutes, I managed to get rid of the 2nd library location. Just open rhythmbox and turn off the Ubuntu One plugin:

Open Rhythmbox

From the menu click "Edit"

Then click "Plugins"

Then in the opened window go down the list and de-select "Ubuntu One"

This automatically removes the secondary folder, go ahead and check it out

Hope this helps.

Aha, great info - thanks for that.

I was unaware of "gconf-editor" - cheers for pointing me towards it.

@Brian Moses: Thanks for the great explanation!

I was aware of the config setting, but never realized it could contain multiple values (I guess "library_locations" is plural after all :). For quite some time now I've been wishing rythmbox would monitor multiple locations, I was just assuming it couldn't. It is a little frustrating that the preferences in the rythmbox GUI is only a simple text box. A listbox would be much more applicable in my opinion.

Note for anyone finding this question again these days:

At least from Quantal onwards, the rhythmbox settings have moved to dconf (so use dconf-editor), and the library key is at /org/gnome/rhythmbox/rhythmdb/locations

Would be good to add this capability directly from Rhythmbox.
