Adjusting buffer for radio streams

Asked by Hil

I was wondering if there is a setting somewhere that I could increase the buffer for the radio streaming. Once in a while the default setting is little short, so I get pauses in my playback.

Thanks.

Install xmms for direct control over various streaming plugins...It will let you adjust the buffer size, and doesn't bother with the song notification, therefore letting you to listen to your internet radio all day long. It can be installed by executing sudo apt-get install xmms from a terminal..

XMMS works until I run out of memory. It has a memory leak some where. Things like that is why Linux will not be a mainstream desktop. We need to make things run better than MS's crap... Which shouldn't be that hard to do.

Paste output of sudo fdisk -l (small L), Normally your swap partition should be double the size of your physical memory to ensure better running of apps under linux.. I think your swap partition is small.. and in linux when system runs out of memory it kills appliocations randoomly for execution of other programs...

fdisk -l:
Disk /dev/sda: 40.0 GB, 40020664320 bytes

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

/dev/sda2 4661 4865 1646662+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 4661 4865 1646631 82 Linux swap / Solaris

I have plenty of memory, especially to just stream music. Running xmms after while you can just watch the system monitor and watch it taking about 600k every few seconds. It was hogging over well over 1GB of memory and the system was pretty much locked up. That is why I am trying to get Rhythmbox to work. But it has issues pausing, stopping all together, or refusing to connect to the stream. Fire up XMMS and it connects right up. I prefer XMMS, but need to restart it every 4 hours to reclaim my memory.

Found a player that looks like and works like XMMS, but uses today's streaming libraries, called Beep Music Player(BMP); also known as Audacious in Fedora. I will test this player out and see if it shows any memory leaking or has any other issues.

So far I like it.

Update... Audacious is actually a spin off. This one works even more like XMMS.

Audacious got disconnected last night and must have started taking memory. It was taking over 650MB of RAM.

BMP got disconnected as well, but stayed at the 128MB it was using since I started it yesterday morning. I think I found my player (at least for now)!

Just an FYI: I believe the reason for the disconnections was due to the storms we had last night.

I am a visual artist that does not understand computer speak. I am running pandora radio and like it very much. I was wondering if there was a way to configure my computer to handle Pandora or do I have to switch to another company? That would suck as I have paid for a year membership. I only recently had Unbutu installed on this system after getting virus after virus on my windows operating system. Please help the village idiot.
