Misc Rhythmbox issues found in 5 minutes

Asked by Victor Engmark

Issue 1: Rhythmbox cannot play MP3 radio, such as the ones in http://streams.frequence3.net/mp3-192.m3u.

Issue 2: R stops playback of OGG streams, such as http://streams.frequence3.net/ogg-112.m3u, after about five seconds.

Issue 3: After adding the station mentioned in issue 2, and starting playback, the window width is changed to be about 1.5 screens wide. The window cannot be resized, and even fullscreen is wider than the screen. Removing all the Frequence3 stations makes the window resizable again. Changing the genre of all the stations from "Unknown" to "Hits" did not help. I don't have a second monitor.

Issue 4: When editing a stream's properties, Enter doesn't close the window

All these issues are with Rhythmbox 0.9.3.1 on Ubuntu Dapper Drake, with all updates installed, and the default Rhythmbox settings.

Regarding issue #1, do the streams work in Totem? Have you installed any extra "gstreamer" plugins?

Yes, they work in Totem or yes you have installed extra plugins?

Do you have gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly or gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 installed?

I can confirm issues #2 and #3 - they occur identically for me.

#2 could be an issue with the particular stream, but I don't know.

#3 looks like a Rhythmbox bug and only occurs for the Ogg Streams - it looks as though it is stretching the window to fit the name of the playing station.

#1 is not an issue for me - the streams play perfectly for me (and don't stop after a few seconds like the ogg streams).

#3 has been fixed in future releases (according to the bug I have linked to).

Re. issue #1: From Totem I get the following message:
Totem could not play 'http://stream-hautdebit.frequence3.net:8000/'.
You do not have a decoder installed to handle this file. You might need to install the necessary plugins.

Kinda strange, I'd think that Ubuntu would be installed with MP3 plugins...

I have not installed any plugins after installing the basic Ubuntu distro.

Don't worry, it is an assumption most people make. Ubuntu can't play mp3s by default because mp3 is "patented". This means that somebody controls the use of the mp3 idea and you need their permission to use it. Ideally, music would all be encoded in Ogg-Vorbis, a patent-free format that offers much better compression and quality than mp3.

But the world isn't ideal. Until it is, you can solve your problem by following the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats

Note that, instead of installing the gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly package, you could install gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3. The first has been around longer but the second has at least been authorised by the guy that owns the mp3 patent.

Can you help with this problem?
