why cant ubuntu play mp3 files??

what is missing??
did i have smth wrong during the installation or is it not supported at all 4 some reason?

should i download any codec? and if yes how do i install it?

vob files dont seem 2 run properly... i will try 2 find out ...

Add repositores universe and multiverse, then search for mp3, eg:

apt-cache search gstreamer mp3

The Ubuntu comes without support to play mp3's because it's a proprietary format, it's not much good.
But, you can easly listen yours mp3's following the instructions in the link above.

With some clicks you can listen/view all proprietary formats :)

have installed gstreamer plugin.still nothing. thanks for your reply.forgive my ignorance.just started using linux.

thanks for your response.I am really new to ubuntu and linux so fogive my ignorance.Have installed the packages you mentioned and still nothing.I used the synapic package manager if that makes a differance

please read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats carefully. it has complete instructions on how to get mp3's and other non-free formats working :)
