How to use X_DEBIAN_SITEID with thin?

Hi, the X_DEBIAN_SITEID patch with the possibility to run multiple instances of redmine is really nice!
However, I do not understand how can I run this with thin https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thin ???
If I want to use the thin init.d script, there is no way to have multiple X_DEBIAN_SITEID env vars set and therefor I can not use this nice mechanism. I think the init.d script is not "harmonized" with the thin package - but for me it looks like thin + nginx is the most carbon-friendly way to serve redmine, so it would be very nice to have these work together... :)
