use rdesktop and you can connect to the terminal services, much like mstsc from windows. You will obviously need to have remote login enabled on the server side.

In a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T), you can type command:
   gksudo update-manager
and in Preferences, change the remote repositories you use to download packets.
If you are not in the US, you can choose a closer repositories. Sometimes, one repository can become temporarily out of connection.

Can you help with this problem?
