Install unrar (or unrar-free) to unppack and rar to pack rar archives.
If not done so far you have to enable the multiverse repositories first.

imago223, what you need to do to unrar/rar things is go to the terminal. It's located in the Applications tab on the upper-left of the screen. Once in the Applications tab, go to the Accessories menu and click on the Terminal to open it. Once in there, type:

sudo aptitude install unrar rar

After that, double click the rar'd file and the Archive Manager will be able to access it. I'd recommend putting the Terminal on the bar beside the Applications Places System bar at the top for easy access in case you need to use it again.
To do this, you just go to where Terminal is located (Applications--->Accessories) and click and drag it to the bar. Hope this helps!
